First, a note on visibility. If you use linkedin, you know that your visibility goes up the more links you have. Your second- and third-degree connections help put your profile in front of more people. I am a 3rd degree link to all three candidates for President! (Yes, Obama, Clinton and McCain are all on linkedin!) There are several ways to increase your connections: The preferred way is to link with friends and colleagues. When I started on linkedin, I convinced a friend who always sends mass emails to a gzillion friends to join linkedin. In about a day, she had over 100 connections, all of which became my 2nd degree connections. Another easy way to increase your visibility is to link with a LION (linkedin open networker). These LIONS have over 500 connections and welcome any invitation to link. You gain visibility to all of their connections with the click of a mouse. Your profile First things first Be sure that anything in your profile is spelled and punctuated correctly! Typos scream dont hire me to anyone with a critical eye. Especially if you are looking for a job, focus your profile to include skills and experiences that will be of interest to potential employers. It should be somewhat conversational to grab the readers attention. It is okay to use I, me or my in your profile, unlike in a resume. (Dont overdo it, though. You dont want to appear self-centered!) Update your status, post an interesting article related to your line of work, make a comment that showcases your professional expertise. A dogged commitment only serves you if you are chasing the right target.2. Compress your timelineWhen you were setting out your resolutions, you had planned to have a full year ahead of you. Lets make the question more interesting. If you only had 3 months to reach your career goals, how would you do it? If your doctor told you could only work 4 hours a day, how would you rethink the challenge and your answer?This question gets at the heart of boosting your progress. All too often, we complicate issues and challenges by adding extra layers of perceived difficulty. Push yourself to cut through the artificial complexity to the core of what matters. You may find that you can make more progress in the next 3 months than you had in the entire year leading up to this point3. Compare your career goals to your daily tasksA quick check between your big annual goals and your dai ly to-do list can predict whether you will be able to make meaningful progress towards what matters to you. If the comparison identifies a big gap, address it. Your career goal may be to be promoted to manager, but if your daily tasks keep you mired in the routines and responsibilities of your current position, you are not giving yourself the opportunity to learn new skills or prove your ability to function at a higher level.If your supervisor is supportive of your long-term career aspirations, consider asking him or her for guidance.4. Take aktionWe love it when the right opportunity falls into our lap. Taking initiative and making things happen takes more effort, courage, and resilience.
